Lions work... being global, acting local

Since Lions clubs were established, Lions have remained committed to improving the lives of those less fortunate, around the world and at home.

On a global scale Lions work in partnership with and support a wide range of internationally recognised organisations including:

  • Sight Savers International
  • International Glaucoma Association
  • UNICEF
  • Across the British Isles and Ireland, Lions work and support organisations such as:

  • Dentaid
  • Diabetes UK
  • Guide Dogs for the Blind
  • Hearing Dogs for Deaf People
  • Medic Alert
  • Tacade
  • Many clubs are renowned for the help they give to their local hospital or hospice. However, Lions work can range from involving members in projects such as cleaning up a community park, to providing children's playgrounds or senior citizen programmes.

In general all Lions clubs help those less fortunate than themselves and pay particular attention to the elderly and disabled providing hope and care to those who need it most.

The "White Cane" for blind people

In 1930 a Lions club member watched a blind man attempt to make his way across a busy street using a black cane. With the realisation that the black cane was barely visable to motorists, the Lions club decided to paint the cane white to increase its visability to on-coming motorists. In 1931, Lions International began a national program promoting the use of white canes for blind people.

This is just one of the many life changing activities we have over the years. With your help, we can make a difference to many more people at home and overseas.

In the words of Winston Churchill:

"The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity,
the optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty"
