Archaeological ButtonThis weekend I helped out at an archaeological dig. The abandoned and demolished building being excavated was the headquarters of the local militia during the Napoleonic wars. I found a number of coins and the button that you can see on the right. The number “62” is fairly clear on the front of the button and should become more obvious when it’s properly cleaned. The local historian supervising the dig thought that military buttons of the period usually had a regiment number on them. He is going to check his references to find out if the 62 does have such a meaning.
