I finished Uncharted: Drake's Fortune today having started the game on Christmas Eve. It’s the second game that I have completed on my PS3; the first was Resistance: Fall of Man.
Uncharted is jolly good, especially the gunfighting. You’re always short of ammunition so you have to aim carefully and not just spray bullets around. The game encourages you to use cover properly, hiding behind walls and sneaking out to shoot. Your enemies also use cover quite intelligently and they will try and outflank you whilst their mates give covering fire. About the only problem was that the enemy quite often tried to throw a grenade at you ignoring obstacles in the way. The grenades bounce back to them but they stand there gormlessly until they blow up.
Another problem that Uncharted and a lot of games like it suffer from is “Invincible Partner” syndrome. When you’ve got another in-game character running alongside you (Elena in Uncharted and Lt. Cartwright in Resistance) you’ll soon notice that they can’t be killed. The storyline requires them to be alive in the next chapter so they just absorb anything that hits them. This can be quite handy; you can leave them to kill most of the enemies while you hide round a corner.
Uncharted certainly has a convoluted story line, from finding a U-Boat halfway up a waterfall; being attacked by 400 year old zombie Spanish sailors; finding a U-Boat pen on a Pacific island and then being attacked by the zombie Spanish sailors in the U-Boat pen. It all makes sense in the end!
Anyway, I’m now going to play Uncharted again, this time on the Hard skill level and I’ll use a walkthrough guide to make sure that I find all of the hidden treasures. Collecting these unlocks some interesting videos on the making of the game.
In summary: A very highly recommended game.
