City Tour of Reykjavík

We had a relaxing morning as our rescheduled city tour didn't begin until midday. It was quite a small tour as it was just us, an elderly Dutch couple and an American with her elderly parents, so there was plenty of room in the minibus.

First stop was the Perlan, gleaming tanks that holds the geothermal hotwater supply for the city. There is an observation platform on the tanks and a unbelievably expensive restaurant.

It was a gloriously sunny day

We visited the house of Àsmundur Sveinsson, a famous 20th century Icelandic sculptor. He designed and built this house himself then lived in it until his death after which it became a museum to his work. The top floor in the dome is the most perfect echo chamber I've ever visited. The lesson is clear - sculptors make crap architects. His early sculpture work was interesting but seem to deteriorate into the abstract over time.

We then had a bizarre tour of the city swimming pool. I'm sure that it was because the tour guide had overdosed on the free coffee at the sculpture museum and needed to visit a toilet.  After that the tour then did a circuit of the city centre. We opted to stay in the centre and walk back to the hotel rather than getting the bus.

The town hall - mind the ducks! There's an interesting, huge, relief map of Iceland on the ground floor

The last night in Iceland. We were rewarded with this beautiful sunset.
