Some friends of mine own a beach chalet at Calshot, on the Solent. They invited me to stay down there with them on the night of the fireworks display that marks the end of Cowes Week.
Another friend and I took the day off work and drove down on Friday morning. We got there in time for lunch then had a relaxing afternoon on the beach. I even had a go in my friend’s canoe which is something that I hadn’t tried for 20 years.
An Isle of Wight ferry. I think the fore and aft superscructure gives these ships a rather ungainly appearance.
As the sun went down we settled in some deck chairs to watch the fireworks display across the water. We saw a few satellites pass over including a very bright one. I later found out that this was the space shuttle docked to the International Space Station.

Worth the wait
The firework display was very good, even when viewed from 3½ miles away across the water. They had a couple that expanded as a circle with a smiley face inside and others that formed hearts. Very cute!
